MY STORY
I’ve been battling an auto-immune disease that hit hard in 2012 and took me out. I have been fighting to provide for my family and to try and recover my health ever since. Over the years it continues to attack at a cellular level, everything from my intestines, my nerves, my brain…and it takes my energy out unpredictably from day to day. I have not been able to hold a typical job, much less follow through on commitments from one day to the next. This is a reality that has been difficult for me to accept.
I have been dealing with symptoms that mimic MS, some degradation of my nervous system, some major issues with my spine and my right arm has lost a lot of strength and some function. The hardest part is the mental & emotional component which the docs refer to as medical PTSD from the prolonged exposure to all of these issues while my body keeps attempting to cope with life.
I am not one to sit by and let this just happen, so I have pursued change with docs, diet, therapy, recovery programs, everything you can think of – and it has been one hell of a journey. Ultimately it has led me to a place where I have recognized my absolute dependence on God, and through it all a vision of a new life (in Jesus Christ) has been produced. I’m not talking religion, I’m talking deep relationship. I had to come to the end of myself and step through.
I can now see that it has all been worth it, all of the trials have humbled me and produced a freedom I would have never known.
This battle has turned me from my old profession, and I was able to act on the vision I was given to create something with an amazing team and partners that have come on board to make this all happen.
Making this leap has not been easy. We have been tight on budget, sold everything we could, taken out retirement and survived on part time work up until now. This is where I get to ask for your help and invite you in. I have a plan (will share below) but essentially I am asking for funds to bridge this gap to the full operation of this organization and ranch.
I am asking for $10 a month for a year from everyone I know.
This will cover the expenses for my role in this development, and it will also provide support for the therapy that insurance doesn’t cover that is helping me continue physically and mentally. Happy to share what that is for anyone who is interested. I figure I need to learn how to receive, and that I need to ask or I will never get the help from those of you who would like to be there for my family and I as we see this through.
So…here is my plan.
In 2019 I went to an equine therapy program called Rite of Passage. It wasn’t a typical equine program…this was unique in the sense that the crew works with some high anxiety horses and wild mustangs that model a lot of the fear our body displays when we deal with anxiety and fear ourselves. These cowboys modeled a relationship of communication, consistency, leadership, love and obedience (I had a lot to learn in that last one). I encountered hope and transformation as the honesty of the horse pointed to my inner life and deep conflict I had within. This set me on a new path. Others that experienced it with me (veterans, dads, moms, corporate leaders, all walks of life) were transformed as well.
We recognized a huge need to share these experiences and programs with others, to build relationships, and to connect to the community and the thousands of people who suffer with mental health issues and are looking for a different approach to change their life and recover. I chose to take the 20+ years of experience I had built with business consulting and apply it to helping build a team, create the systems, spread the Word, and build a brand and community around these life-impacting encounters. We created the non-profit partnerships, and we are growing, funding and supporting this in a way that can reach thousands this upcoming season.
To date we have served over 1000 people, 50+ horses, we have 10 ranches that we operate in, we have over 20 experiences in our directory and we are building our business sponsor directory now. We have lines out the door of people wanting to attend and many of them who are in tough spots in life and cannot afford the cost. We are securing grants to get scholarships so we can serve everyone in the community that is seeking the help. We have partnerships with prison release programs, veteran organizations, school districts, churches, corporations and other community members and leaders.
We have some big plans for expansion, and I am finding that for me personally…working in this capacity…where I stay around these horses, share the vision, tell the stories and just connect the resources and people…I am thriving and regaining my health. I need your help to carry through to when the organization will produce the funding and salary I need by spring of 2025
To be clear, this is a personal ask from my heart. This is an expression of the fire and spirit that has been placed in me, an outlet to share something I encountered. All of this has given me life, and I have seen it save other’s lives as well. This is an opportunity for you to help me get it out to those who are seeking and searching.
